Beyond feeling honored, Dr. Kozlen acknowledges that an exemplary principal sets higher standards and integrates best practices into the school's design, which helps shape its culture and community.

"I believe that best practices involve genuinely doing what is best for children," Dr. Kozlen explains. "This includes creating a safe and supportive environment, providing necessary resources, embracing restorative practices, and ensuring everyone feels valued and appreciated. These elements are key to building a successful school community."

MAESP is a statewide organization dedicated to supporting the needs of elementary and middle school principals, assistant principals, and educators aspiring to become principals in Missouri. Each of the eleven MAESP Regional Networks nominates a member principal in their second or third year at the elementary or middle school level. To qualify, the principal must demonstrate outstanding contributions to the community and the field of education.
