Schools across the Hazelwood School District encourage their students to read both in and out of the classroom. Many schools have different incentive programs for the students, ranging from pizza programs to programs with the St. Louis Blues.

Over at McCurdy Elementary, their incentive program rewards students for reading 20 minutes daily, answering comprehension questions, and turning in their monthly logs for a prize. The prizes come from the school’s “Treasure Box,” which includes items such as pencils, bookmarks, bracelets, and now, new books.

Thanks to Chris Hennekes, general manager at Honda of Frontenac, McCurdy’s Magnificent Reader program will get some new reading material for students to take home and begin building their own library. On behalf of Honda of Frontenac, Chris presented a $1,000 check to McCurdy Principal Dr. Germaine Stewart and reading specialists Meagan Thate and Missy Keeven.

“We are so grateful to receive a donation of $1,000 from Honda of Frontenac, which will help support our Magnificent Readers program,” exclaimed Meagan Thate, a reading specialist at McCurdy. “This program allows our Mustangs to take books home and practice their literacy skills outside of the classroom. Here at McCurdy, we try to go above and beyond to help the growth of all our Mustangs, and this donation makes that possible.”

“We were contacted by the staff here at McCurdy Elementary about the Magnificient Readers program and that they could use some support to ensure their students would have enough resources and books for the rest of the school year,” Hennekes detailed. “We were happy to donate $1,000 to that program and look forward to them putting that money to good use.”

The Hazelwood School District would like to thank Honda of Frontenac for investing in our children’s education, which will allow them to raise their voices for HSD!
