A Message from the Superintendent

Greetings HSD Community,

On behalf of the Board of Education, I want to thank you for making the start of the 2022-2023 academic year successful. We’re back and we’re better! As I visit schools, it is clear that our commitment to high expectations and excellence has never been stronger. Students, parents, faculty, staff, and community partners are all playing crucial roles in the education process. We are off to a great start because of you!

Thank you for your unwavering support.

Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart

Esports Goes Live

HSD is excited for competitive esports! The development of the HSD Esports program began summer of 2022. Esports turns online gaming into a spectator sport. It mimics the experience of watching a professional sporting event, except instead of watching a physical event, spectators watch video gamers compete against each other. Esports increases social emotional learning (SEL) skills while helping students take their gaming skills to the next level. Esports also boosts strategic thinking, teamwork, communication, leadership, performance and confidence building skills.

Dr. Nevels Appointed by NCTM

HSD’s Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator Dr. Nevels has been appointed to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Publishing Committee (PC).

NCTM’s committees and editorial panels are central to the Council’s work, second only to the Board of Directors in their leadership role in NCTM. Dr. Nevels’ appointment is recognition of his significant contributions to and leadership in mathematics Education. “I am excited to have an opportunity to serve the greater mathematics education community. It is my belief that the single greatest determinant of learning mathematics is not socioeconomic factors or funding levels. It is undoubtedly the quality of mathematics instruction,” said Dr. Nevels. “I will use this platform to highlight any opportunity to improve teacher pedagogical content knowledge and the building of mathematics learning communities.”

In this role, Dr. Nevels will continue to serve NCTM and his peers in advancing the highest quality mathematics education for all of our HSD students!

Prop H - Maintaining Our Schools
Zero-Tax-Change Bond Issue

HSD will have a zero-tax change bond issue on the November ballot. The bond issue is proposed to fund safety and security improvements, updates and renovations to athletic/activity facilities, classroom technology and network upgrades, purchase new school buses, improve the energy efficiency of facilities, and pay off existing lease obligations for school bus purchases and energy efficiency projects. Passage of the bond issue does not increase the district’s debt service tax rate, which is used solely to fund construction and major repair and improvement projects in the district.

Family & Community Involvement

Family and Community Involvement Challenge

HSD has designated the week of September 12, 2022, as Hazelwood School District Family and Community Involvement Week which will be the kick-off for the family engagement challenge that will last through October 12, 2022.

All Hazelwood schools will be challenged to host parent involvement events during this month.
The schools, one at each level, with the most parent involvement will be the winners. Dr. Collins-Hart will announce the winning schools at the culminating event which is the Fall Family Festival on October 12, 2022, at Hazelwood Central High School, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. There will be traveling trophies for the winners. Contact your school for more information on how you can get involved!

My Sci

Three Hazelwood Teachers Attend mySci Summer Institutes at Washington University

Sayre Adkins of Lawson Elementary, LaWesha Bush of Arrowpoint Elementary, and Jacqueline McGill of Keeven Elementary recently attended the mySci Summer Institute, a professional development opportunity designed for teachers. “I wanted to refresh my memory about the resource and also come out with something new that would help me,” said Bush. “I really wanted to dive into the standards, to elevate myself professionally. There were a lot of aha moments for me this time around.” The mySci program aims to inspire the next generation of scientific thinkers by engaging K-8 students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through interactive learning experiences and creative, standards-aligned curriculum.

HSD Board of EducationBoard Statement of Solidarity

The horrific, depraved murder of George Floyd left many in our community shocked and enraged. That anger has been further amplified by the senseless murder of Breonna Taylor and now Rayshard Brooks, all unarmed African Americans who were killed by the police. These and other recent instances of lethal attacks against African Americans are unacceptable. This is an American issue, not a black issue. As such, we all have a collective responsibility to fight against the ills of racism. The HSD Board of Education stands in solidarity with the millions of Americans stepping forward in this fight. We stand with our community to say, “enough is enough!”
