Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Question:
Why are the COVID-19 quarantine numbers so high?
Answer:
As of September 8, there were 600 active quarantined students across the district. For context, that is approximately 3.5% of enrolled students (17,147). Additionally, there were 76 active COVID-19 positive students. That is approximately 0.4% of enrolled students.
There were 13 active quarantined employees across the district. That is 0.4% of employees (2,942). Additionally, there were eight active COVID-19 positive employees. That is approximately 0.3% of employees.
The district follows St. Louis County Department of Public Health contact tracing guidelines to identify students and employees who need to be quarantined. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health establishes the quarantine length requirements. Keep in mind, the purpose of quarantine is to reduce additional exposures to the COVID-19 virus and keep the COVID-19 infection numbers low. While our quarantine numbers may appear to be high, the percentages reveal that numbers are actually relatively low. Additionally, it is important to note that our thorough contact tracing process, which identifies students and employees who need to be quarantined, can be directly linked to why our active COVID-19 positive employee and student case numbers are low.
One of the best ways to help keep our numbers low is for parents to inform the district immediately if their student tests positive for COVID-19. Employees are asked to do the same. Additionally, anyone who is sick or displaying symptoms should not enter an HSD bus or building. Thank you for doing your part to Help Hazelwood Get Healthy!

Help Hazelwood Get Healthy Campaign Targets Vaccine & Testing Education
As the award-winning Help Hazelwood Get Healthy campaign continues, COVID-19 vaccine and testing education will be the priorities. HSD encourages all those who are eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Close contacts who are fully vaccinated and not displaying COVID-19 symptoms do not have to quarantine, according to the St. Louis County Department of Public Health. HSD also encourages anyone who has been exposed to a positive COVID-19 case or is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms to get tested. Please visit the COVID-19 Testing and Vaccine Information webpage for more details about testing and vaccine opportunities and to view an in-depth interview with the new Director of the Department of Health for the city of St. Louis, Dr. Matifadza Hlatshwayo Davis.

Board Statement of Solidarity
The horrific, depraved murder of George Floyd left many in our community shocked and enraged. That anger has been further amplified by the senseless murder of Breonna Taylor and now Rayshard Brooks, all unarmed African Americans who were killed by the police. These and other recent instances of lethal attacks against African Americans are unacceptable. This is an American issue, not a black issue. As such, we all have a collective responsibility to fight against the ills of racism. The HSD Board of Education stands in solidarity with the millions of Americans stepping forward in this fight. We stand with our community to say, “enough is enough!”
