Emerson STEM Academy Gives East High School Student Head Start on College
Shelbe Davis, Jr., a 2021 Hazelwood East High School graduate, earned more than 50 college credits from St. Louis Community College through the Emerson STEM Academy dual enrollment program.
In addition to earning college credits, the program gave Davis, Jr. a chance to participate in advanced STEM activities and interact with college mentors.
“The people, the teachers, and the experience really opened doors for me,” Davis, Jr. said.
Davis, Jr. received acceptance letters from more than 25 colleges and earned more than $1 million in scholarship offers. In the fall, he will attend Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville to study engineering.
“I am proud of what I’ve accomplished, but I know there is more work to be done,” Davis, Jr. said.
Prior to becoming a dual enrollment student at East High, Davis, Jr. attended East Middle School and Twillman Elementary School.
He says defeating negative stereotypes is part of his motivation.
“We need to step up and be an example,” he said. “Be who you are. Don’t be who the world thinks you are.”
