East High School Pep Rally Builds Excitement for School-Based Health Center
School staff and student leaders at Hazelwood East High School found a creative way to get students excited about the school's new Health Center.
The school held a pep rally March 28 for students who submitted their permission forms to receive treatment at the facility; the event was sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater St. Louis.
More than 300 students submitted forms and took part in the rally, which included giveaways, music, and a battle between three DJs.
A student advisory committee made up of about 15 students helped plan the event; members of the group help share information about the center and contribute to marketing and other efforts within the school.
“We’re just trying to promote the health center and get everybody hyped and aware of it. We just want to talk about it, get students more information, and spread the word," freshman committee member Praise Aruwajoye said.
The student group helped design the t-shirts they wore at the pep rally; the shirts were labeled with 'C217' on the front, which is the room number of the health center at the school.
The health center is the first of its kind in the Hazelwood School District and allows students to receive immunizations, sports physicals, behavioral health treatment, and more services in school.
The clinic operates thanks to a partnership between the district, CareSTL, BJC, and the Christian Hospital Foundation.
