Hazelwood Opportunity Center Teacher Earns Emerson Teacher of the Year Award

Hazelwood teacher Risa Schoene was recognized with a 2018 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award on Nov. 11.

Schoene was selected as the Emerson Teacher of the Year for the Hazelwood School District; one educator from each district school is nominated for the award.

Schoene teaches social studies at the Hazelwood Opportunity Center in the Success Academy was recognized for excellence in her field.

"It is really humbling to know that I was selected for this award by the district when there are so many talented educators in Hazelwood," Schoene said. "Then it was even more humbling when at the awards ceremony, I listen to the names and locations of the educators who I share this award with. I am so proud to represent the Success Academy, the Opportunity Center, and the Hazelwood District in this capacity."

Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart surprised Schoene with the news in her classroom along with Assistant Superintendents Dr. Bruce Green, Juan Cordova, and Opportunity Center Principal Dr. Darrell Strong.

"Ms. Schoene is dedicated to her students and their growth and I am very proud of her," Dr. Collins-Hart said. "She is more than deserving of an Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award."

The Emerson Excellence in Teaching Awards program, sponsored by Emerson, annually recognizes more than 100 educators in the St. Louis metropolitan area – from kindergarten teachers to college professors – who are examples of excellence in their field.
