Brown Elementary School was named a winner of the 2019-2020 Green Schools Quest by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The competition challenges schools in Missouri and Southern Illinois to devise and implement creative, effective, and low-cost sustainable practices.

Brown Elementary was recognized with a 3rd place award in the Elementary Schools category for its Waste Warriors program.

The program encouraged all students to practice sustainability efforts, and included student learning activities like collecting plastic lids from the community to be used as playground furniture, collecting data about the school’s green habits, and advocating for use of reusable silverware.

Schools across the region took part in the event throughout the school year with guidance from a Green Mentor, a volunteer professional with an interest or expertise in sustainability.

This is the second consecutive year Brown Elementary was recognized in the Green Schools Quest; the school’s student-led Green Team was recognized a year ago for encouraging recycling and teamwork throughout the school.
