English Language Arts

  • In reading this semester we have really been focusing on understanding what we read. We have been stopping and taking notes as we read (ask your student about “stopping and jotting”). We have also put an emphasis on going back into the text to help us answer questions. The focus is based primarily on independent reading comprehension using third grade level text (text that is leveled anywhere from 610-770).

    Kids A-Z/Raz-Plus is a great resource to find appropriate reading materials for your student. Please review the reading passage and questions on Raz-Plus with your child to ensure that he/she is able comprehend the text independently. 

Mathematics

  • In math we have been focusing on multiplication, division, and fractions. We have been working a lot on answering word problems that are worth 3 points each. 1 point for an equation, one for the correct answer, and 1 for showing your work. We do this so that the students will really focus on how they came up with their answer because the process is just as important as the answer. Knowing facts is essential so we will continue the weekly multiplication fact tests.

    Since MAP Testing is quickly approaching we are currently reviewing all third grade math skills. This includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, area, perimeter, geometrical shapes, identifying fractions, equivalent fractions, as well as fractions on a number line. 

    In our reviewing, we noticed that there are some skills that we are still needing some extra support with. Some of the skills are three digit subtraction with regrouping, telling time and elapsed time. 

Science

  • In this unit, students will learn how both individual organisms and groups of organisms change over time. Students will explore science concepts of life cycles, traits, heredity, and natural selection. First, students will learn about plant and animal life cycles by growing and observing herbs and mealworms. Students will watch a seed grow into a plant, and watch time lapse videos of plants growing from seed to adult, flowering plant. They will then observe and read about mealworms, and learn about other organisms that lay eggs and undergo metamorphosis like mealworms do. Next, students will learn how to make a scientific drawing. Finally, students will consider traits of living things. They will learn that some traits are inherited, or come from parents. Other traits are influenced by the environment. Ultimately, the traits living things have will either help or hinder their ability to complete their life cycle (survive and reproduce).
