Hazelwood School District is proud to celebrate two outstanding educators who were recognized by the Saint Louis Science Center for excellence in STEM education.

Christy Lewis, a mathematics and computer science teacher at Hazelwood West High School, was named the 2026 recipient of the Carol B. and Jerome T. Loeb Prize for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics. The prestigious award honors educators who inspire student achievement and innovation in science and mathematics education across the St. Louis region.

In addition, Christian Viernes of Hazelwood Central High School earned second place in this year’s competition.

Lewis was recognized for her commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment where all students feel supported and empowered to succeed. Both educators were honored during an awards ceremony hosted by the Science Center on May 21.

“This award means so much to me because it represents the success and growth of my students over the years,” said Mrs. Lewis. “Some of the most rewarding parts of teaching are seeing students gain confidence, overcome challenges, and live up to their fullest potential. I am grateful and honored to be a small part of my students' journeys.”

When asked what she hopes students take away from their classroom experience, Lewis shared, “I hope my students walk away from my class knowing that I care deeply about each and every one of them. I want them to know that I believe in them and support them. I want them to know they can do hard things. Sometimes that requires putting forth a little more effort than they thought possible. I want them to know they have the capacity to solve hard problems, both in math and how that same thinking process carries over into life problems. I want them to have the confidence to know they can do anything they set their minds to do.”

Receiving this recognition is both humbling and deeply meaningful because it reflects the work I care about most: helping students feel curious, supported, and capable of learning difficult things,” said Mr. Viernes regarding his recognition.. He continued, “I hope my students leave my classroom knowing that science is not just about memorizing facts. I hope they understand that their voices, experiences, and questions matter.”

The Hazelwood School District congratulates Mrs.Lewis and Mr. Viernes on this outstanding achievement and thanks them for their dedication to inspiring the next generation of learners.
