Grannemann Elementary launched the 2025–2026 school year on a high note with its third annual Character Olympics, an energetic and engaging event that celebrated character, teamwork, and school spirit.

Now in its third year, the Character Olympics continues to set a positive tone for the year ahead, emphasizing the importance of cooperation, creativity, and connection.

“My favorite part was playing with Legos and doing the hula hoops and cup stacking with my friends,” said fourth-grader Mason Haynes. “We should definitely do it again next year — maybe even add video games!”

Second-grader Lola Brown shared her excitement as well. “I liked the electronics in the cafeteria. I was trying to make something fly! And the parachute game in the gym was awesome. I liked playing with my whole class.”

This year’s highlights included:

  • Relay races in the gym, led by PE teachers Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Robinson, who incorporated fresh team-building games from their recent professional development training.
  • A STEM station in the cafeteria, organized by the Scouts, longtime supporters of Grannemann who have partnered with the school for the past three years.
  • Support from parent volunteer Ms. Ebony Fields, whose involvement helped strengthen the home-school connection.

Throughout the day, students showcased curiosity and creativity, particularly during STEM activities. Working in teams, they practiced key character traits such as cooperation, patience, perseverance, and sportsmanship — building trust and strengthening communication along the way.

In the library, students took on a cooperative cup-stacking challenge, a fun and focused activity requiring communication and persistence. These moments not only built excitement but also reinforced the school’s core values, reminding students and staff of the character expectations they are encouraged to uphold daily.

“The Character Olympics is an essential tradition in our elementary school because it allows students to actively practice the skills and character traits that help them succeed both in and out of the classroom,” said Jessica Strong, Grannemann math specialist. “Each of the six stations was carefully designed to allow students to practice our school-wide expectations while engaging in activities that required teamwork, perseverance, kindness, encouragement, critical thinking, focus, and effective communication.” Strong added, “The impact is lasting — students strengthen their character, build meaningful relationships, and lay a strong foundation for a positive school culture throughout the year.”

The event wrapped up in classrooms, where teachers led a “Would You Rather” activity to foster connection and relationship-building among students and staff.

As the new school year begins, Grannemann’s Character Olympics once again proved to be a unifying, inspiring experience — one that reminds everyone of what it means to be part of a strong, character-driven school community.
