Mr. John Barnes

A transplant from the Chicago suburbs, Mr. Barnes grew up in a musical family, performing music from an early age in church, school and the community. He taught grade school music for a short time before taking a high school position in East St. Louis, Illinois. Over the thirteen years he taught at East St. Louis Sr. High School, the music program achieved local notoriety as one of the best among urban St. Louis high schools. Following this, John taught at Parkway South High School (Manchester, Missouri) before arriving at Hazelwood Southeast Middle School. Under his direction, students have routinely earned seats in regional honor band festivals, top ratings at state adjudications, and awards in local contests. Many of his students are currently pursuing university degrees on music scholarships. John earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his Master of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education and the Missouri Music Educators Association, an active music arranger and performer in the St. Louis region. John and his wife frequent local music venues and restaurants when they are not at home rejoicing in the birth of their first child.
