Introducing Author Camille Brown
Camille is a second-grader at Barrington. She co-authored a book, Opral's First Day, with her mother, T. Elain Brown. When asked about her experience writing a book with her mother, Camille stated that she "says the words to her mom" and that her mom also "helps make the pictures". Camille went on to say that she was inspired to write a book because her mother is an author. We are all very proud of Camille and we can't wait of her next book! Opral's First Day is available from Amazon. -
Central High Student-Athletes Team Up and Mentor Barrington Elementary Student-Athletes
Central High’s student-athletes recently teamed up with students from Barrington Elementary to mentor and encourage the next generation of student-athletes in the Hazelwood School District.
The Barrington Bulldogs cheer team attended a recent Central High girls’ basketball game and had the opportunity to get first-hand experience of what it takes to be a cheerleader at the high school level.
“We all have someone we looked up to, someone who encouraged us and gave us advice that has stuck with us into adulthood as we worked toward the things we are passionate about,” detailed Carolyn Burbridge, Barrington’s Special School District’s K-5 resource teacher and cheer coach. “Giving these kids a chance at meeting a mentor in elementary school is giving them a chance to meet a mentor that could potentially change the course of the pursuit of their dreams and goals.”
The Hazelwood School District strives to provide academic, socioemotional, and behavioral support for all students, and having these students involved in extracurricular activities along with the mentorship on display helps accomplish that goal.
“I often tell our young students that what they are doing today will help propel them into the places they want to be later,” expressed Lacesha Jeffers, Barrington’s PTA vice president and volunteer cheer coach. “It was nice that our students were able to talk with the Central High student-athletes and ask a few questions, and for the high school students to know that how they carry themselves is important and has an impact on younger students. I can't thank Central High's Athletic Director, Dr. Nicholas Howard, and the Hawks staff enough for being so accommodating.”
Beyond cheer, peer-to-peer collaboration helps both elementary and high school students feel empowered to accomplish their goals.
“It was definitely a great experience for my girls to see that they always have someone counting on them to show up and show out,” exclaimed Nae Green, Central High’s cheer coach. “I think having a mentor is something everyone should have, not just kids or teens, but adults as well. It’s always good to have someone who can help guide you and figure out life!”

Barrington Students Level Up with LexiaThe Lexia Core5 Reading Program is an evidenced-based program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for students of all abilities, helping them make the critical shift from learning to read to reading to learn. With this program, Barrington students PK-5 are given lessons at their individual instructional level. These lessons are based on the 5 pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson and when a student is ready they level up. Every time a student levels up they place a leaf on our Lexia tree. With the advancement our students have demonstated, we will have a Lexia forest by the end of the year!
