PHASE I
About six years ago, more than 1,000 Hazelwood School District community members came together to participate in one of the largest public engagement campaigns in Missouri. District staff members and residents attended meetings, studied issues facing the school district, collaborated and made recommendations.
This effort produced a long-range facilities plan for our District and the recommendation of a bond initiative and tax levy, which were both placed on the ballot in 2004. The recommendations included four new middle schools and full-day kindergarten in all 20 elementary schools. Both the bond initiative and tax levy were approved by voters.
In 2007, HSD welcomed students to four new middle schools. Additionally, HSD made significant updates to the two existing middle schools. Hazelwood Northwest Middle School received a new media center and renovated science rooms. The District also completed lighting and ceiling renovations to the upstairs classrooms and cafeteria. The classroom trailers were removed.
At Hazelwood East Middle School, the District added a new media center and renovated science, art and foreign language classrooms. HSD also renovated the main office and removed the classroom trailers.
In August 2007, kindergarten students attended full-day at all 20 elementary schools.
PHASE II
Upon completion of Phase I projects, Hazelwood 1st participants reconvened to evaluate Phase II of HSD’s long-range facilities plan. Through this process, it became evident that many school buildings did not meet the Missouri standards. For example, students were receiving instruction under staircases, in storage closets and in the hallways. Additionally, most libraries did not meet the state’s minimum size requirements.
Members of the Hazelwood 1st public engagement effort recommended the Board of Education place a $65 million bond initiative on the ballot. In November of 2006, more than 70 percent of the voters approved this initiative to make much-needed improvements to our schools.
HSD completed projects, as promised. Students at Hazelwood Central High School now have access to a new, state-of-the-art library. The new library is almost twice the size of the previous library, allowing the school to provide many more resources to our students. Hazelwood West High School also received a significant upgrade to the heating and air conditioning system.
The administration building, which was renamed The HSD Learning Center, was renovated with an addition to house the Hazelwood Central Early Childhood and GALACTIC gifted programs.
Renovations were also made at the following elementary schools: Armstrong, Barrington, Brown, Cold Water, Garrett, Grannemann, Jamestown, Jana, Jury, Keeven, Lawson, Lusher, McCurdy, McNair, Russell, Townsend, Twillman and Walker.
Libraries were constructed or renovated. In order to ensure school safety, school offices were expanded and relocated to the front of the building to better supervise traffic in and out of the buildings. To better serve children when they are sick, improvements were made to the nurse’s clinics. Many schools received new classrooms while others received classroom upgrades.
Larimore Elementary School is currently undergoing similar renovations and upgrades as the last project in Phase II of the long-range facilities plan.
PHASE III
Hazelwood 1st participants reconvened this past spring to prioritize facility needs for HSD for Phase III. Clcik here for recommendation.
